Yeovil's fight for League One safety will have to extend another week after a curling free kick from Sam Saunders denied them all three points at Brentford this afternoon.

Gavin Tomlin had given Yeovil a third minute lead from the penalty spot after a handball from Charlie MacDonald in the box but Saunders' spectacular effort combined with Tranmere's draw at Colchester means Yeovil still need one more point to guarantee staying in the division.

Manager Terry Skiverton made one change to the side with Keiran Murtagh coming in for Shaun MacDonald and he would have been delighted with the start his side got.

Having already won a corner inside ninety seconds, Congolese midfielder Kalala collided with Bees midfielder Charlie MacDonald in the area, the ball hitting MacDonald on the arm. Referee Horwood was ideally placed to give the penalty and Tomlin sent Arsenal loanee keeper Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way to score Yeovil's 400th goal since joining the Football League in 2003.

Lionel Ainsworth had Glovers keeper Alex McCarthy scrambling to his back post on six minutes and ten minutes later his shot had the sting taken out of it by Steven Caulker's block as the Bees started to get back into the game.

McCarthy saved well from impressive midfielder David Hunt from a direct free kick on twenty minutes and Yeovil fans hearts missed a beat when Caulker's back header forced McCarthy to back pedal quickly.

Leon Legge headed wide on the half hour from a corner before Hunt volleyed out the ground from a corner.

Saunders curled an effort wide of the far post and Hunt sent a skidding effort straight at McCarthy as the visitors struggled to create any clear cut chances.

Talismanic midfielder Gavin Williams went off with a knee injury three minutes before the break after a knock in a tackle and was replaced by Luke Ayling.

Murtagh had the first chance of the second half when his shot whistled past the upright but Brentford fought back and Hunt again found McCarthy in fine form saving a fierce shot down low to his left.

Arron Davies came on for winger Andy Welsh just after the hour and his first contribution was to swing over a corner that Caulker met with a flying header that went over the bar.

A wonderful right flank move involving Bowditch, Tomlin, Alcock and Murtagh ended with the ex-Charlton midfielder's shot deflected for a corner.

With fifteen minutes left, Yeovil gave away a free kick right outside the box and Saunders curled a stunning effort into the corner of the net leaving McCarthy helpless for a goal they may just have deserved.

Ben Strevens headed over five minutes later when he should have done better and full back Kevin O'Connor fired well wide from outside the box.

The final chance came to Brentford old boy Tomlin who was desperately unlucky not to grab a winner when his shot was met with a fabulous reaction save by Szczesny down low to his left.

All back to Huish Park next week where a draw should be good enough due to Tranmere's awful goal difference. It could so easily have been settled today but Yeovil will feel that next week will see their League One status assured.
