Yeovil produced one of their best performances of the season to see off Brentford at Huish Park this afternoon.

Goals in each half from Craig Alcock and Andy Welsh (pictured) provided the Glovers with their first win since the opening day of the season and the scoreline slightly flattered a Brentford side currently on a poor run of form.

The Glovers set their stall out early and attacked from the off breaking down the left hand side.

With just four minutes gone Ryan Mason, making one of many surging forward runs, was brought down by Bristol City loanee James Wilson. Nathan Jones' free kick was met by Steven Caulker but keeper Nikki Bull caught comfortably.

Yeovil continued looking lively and forced two corners with strong attacking play. Jean-Paul Kalala and Shaun MacDonald paired up successfully in the middle while Mason pushed further forward.

Yeovil's third corner produced a first chance for striker Sam Williams but his shot was blocked. Mason again surged forward and chipped his cross in but again the ball was cleared.

The incessant pressure simply had to tell and on twenty-five minutes, so it proved. Gavin Tomlin's cross was knocked out for a corner. Welsh's outswinging kick was met perfectly by Craig Alcock whose bullet header beat keeper Bull easily.

Within ninety seconds, it was nearly two when Williams' flicked header found Welsh but the winger shot wide.

At last the visitors, quiet until now, came more into the game but still barely tested Alex McCarthy. Williams' aerial dominance was causing problems for Bees defenders Alan Bennett and Mark Phillips and they had to resort to fouling the big forward to thwart him.

The only clear sight of goal came with two minutes of the first period left. MacDonald brought Steve Kabba down outside the box but Kevin O'Connor's set piece was easily blocked.

The home fans were hoping for an equally bright start after half time and they got what they wanted with Mason's shot deflected for a corner.

Six minutes in though and it was two-nil. Tomlin pushed a ball through to Welsh and he deftly flicked past Bull for his first ever Glovers goal. The winger celebrated rather too enthusiastically and received a yellow card for his trouble.

By now, Welsh was flying and two minutes later, he roared down the left wing on a sixty-yard run which was crudely halted by Marcus Bean.

The free kick was cleared to MacDonald whose chip back in was met by Alcock who couldn't get a proper connection on to it.

The captain had a carbon copy chance five minutes later as Yeovil pressed for a third.

The visitors finally started worrying the Yeovil back line and their pressure produced two corners in quick succession. With fifteen minutes left, a thunderous shot from left-back Sam Wood rebounded firmly off the post and back into the area.

Hindsight suggests that was to be Brentford's best chance although Charlie MacDonald and Marcus Bean both sliced shots wide when they should have done better.

Manager Terry Skiverton brought new striker Craig Davies on for the last fourteen minutes and the front man looked lively during his cameo appearance.

Alcock nearly grabbed his second and Yeovil's third when his header looped on to the bar with nine minutes to go but the story of the last part of the game was the frustration shown by Brentford at the dominance of their hosts.

Bean was booked for scuffling with Kalala on the halfway line before sub Danny Foster cynically scythed Mason down outside the box, the set piece coming to nothing.

Despite four minutes of stoppage time, Yeovil comfortably held on for their first win in ten games. At times, they played like they'd been on a long unbeaten run themselves and the manager will be hoping today's spark and confidence can be taken into Tuesday night's duel with Millwall.
