After netting the only goal of the game just before the hour-mark, Wilkinson was forced to put on a pair of gloves and go in goal as Liam O’Brien could no longer continue in the ten minutes of stoppage time.

Having already suffered a broken nose from an earlier incident, the makeshift shot-stopper pulled off a magnificent save late on to ensure the three points headed back to Somerset.

Speaking to YTTV, Wilkinson said: “It happened in slow motion for me. I tried to get across to it as quickly as possible and luckily it hit the post and I’ve clawed it out for a corner.

“I’m one of those who will always put their hands up if that sort of thing happens, thankfully today it’s paid off for us.

“You’re not going to go through the season without getting knocks, bruises and cuts and if we win I’ll take them every week. It’s just the sort of person I am.”

Involved at both ends of the pitch, the former Stevenage defender hammered home what would be the winning goal for the green and whites in the 58th minute.

The hard-earned victory marked the first time since 2013 that five straight league wins have been recorded, but Wilkinson insists there is still room for improvement.

“I thought Gold (Omotayo) was going to score, but the keeper made a good save and it fell nicely for me and thankfully it went in the back of the net.

“It was obviously a nice feeling to get the winning goal, but the main thing is the three points. It doesn’t matter who scored.

“I don’t think today it was really a great game on our part, but we’ve come away with a win that’s the most pleasing thing. We’ve not played unbelievably, but we still have three points.

“We’ve taken five wins on the bounce now so all we’re looking to do now is carry that on.”
